A castle visit, a meal or a stage of the Welterbesteig trail: we drive you up the Danube along the south bank to Aggstein and then up Kuenringerstraße to the car park in front of the ruin. We bring you back at the agreed time — from the castle or from the end of your hike.
The castle on the rocky spur
Aggstein Castle Ruin stands on a rocky spur that juts out from the Dunkelsteinerwald towards the Danube — high above the right bank and above the village of Aggstein, in the market town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach in the Melk district. The site goes back to a high-medieval castle and was held by the Kuenring family until the 14th century; most of what you see today dates from the rebuilding begun in 1429 under Jörg Scheck von Wald. Inside the castle there is a tavern, and the shop in front of it offers coffee and snacks, also to hikers who are only passing by. Along the south bank and up the hill
From Krems we cross the Danube on the St. Pöltner Brücke (B37), as the Stein–Mautern bridge is closed to cars. We then follow the B33 upstream along the right bank to Aggstein, turn off uphill there and take the steep access road that climbs all the way to the castle.
From the hammer forge to Hofarnsdorf
Stage 10 of the Welterbesteig Wachau trail is a point-to-point walk: from the hammer forge in Aggsbach-Dorf up to the ruin, on via Maria Langegg through the Dunkelsteinerwald and down to Hofarnsdorf castle on the Danube. A car of your own would be waiting at the wrong end — we take you to the start and collect you at the finish.

Frequently asked questions
Do we get out down on the B33 or up at the castle?
Up at the castle. According to the castle’s website, cars can drive up, and there is parking in front of the ruin — that is where we drop you. Down by the Danube, at the Aggsteiner Hof, the regional bus stops; from there the way up is on foot, either the short, steep Eselsteig path or a longer, gentler route. The Welterbesteig stage passes the castle — where can you drop us off and pick us up?
At the start, at the finish and in between at the castle. The stage begins at the hammer forge in Aggsbach-Dorf and ends at Hofarnsdorf castle, which belongs to the municipality of Rossatz-Arnsdorf on the same bank. If you only walk as far as the ruin, you will find the Welterbesteig stamp point in front of its entrance and can join us there. We agree the meeting point and a rough time when you book.
Aggstein, Aggsbach-Dorf, Aggsbach Markt — where exactly do you drive?
The castle ruin lies on the right bank of the Danube in the market town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach, which also includes the village of Aggstein below the castle and Aggsbach-Dorf. Aggsbach Markt and Willendorf in der Wachau, by contrast, lie opposite on the left bank, in the separate municipality of Aggsbach in the Krems district. Just name the exact destination when you book: the ruin, the village or the other bank.
We are coming to the knights’ banquet as a group — how does the ride work?
Tell us the number of people when you book and we plan the ride accordingly. You book the banquet itself directly with the castle; we only take care of the drive up and back down.
