The abbey in the lower Traisental
Herzogenburg Abbey, a house of Augustinian canons, stands on Prandtauerring in Herzogenburg, in the lower Traisental north of St. Pölten. Bishop Ulrich of Passau founded it in 1112 where the Traisen then met the Danube; in 1244 the canons moved here because of the constant threat of flooding. The baroque rebuilding began in 1714 to plans by Jakob Prandtauer, who also designed the façades. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach planned the ceremonial hall on the east side and, with it, the east façade. The baroque building work ended with the consecration of the church in 1785. A ducal hat with the abbey cross crowns the church tower, and canons still live in the house today.
Timed to your tour
From Krems we cross the Danube and take the expressway into the Traisental to the abbey. Its most prestigious approach, the gate building on the north side, faces towards Krems — the abbey itself suggests this reflects the town’s former role as the centre of the region. Tours start in the abbey shop in the gatehouse, and we plan the departure so that you are there in good time.
Home, or on to Dürnstein
Once the tour is over, we take you home — or add a second leg: on to Dürnstein and its former abbey, which still belongs to Herzogenburg today. That way you see both houses in one day without driving yourself; we cover the leg in between and the way home.

Yes, the two houses belong together: Dürnstein Abbey, the one with the blue tower, was dissolved in 1788 and passed to Herzogenburg, which still looks after the parish of Dürnstein today. We drive every ride that day, including the leg in between, and settle the order with you on the phone to suit your visits.
