The landmark of the Wachau
Dürnstein Abbey is a former Augustinian canons’ monastery: founded in 1372 by Elsbeth von Kuenring as a chapel dedicated to St Mary, established as a monastery in 1410 and dissolved under Emperor Joseph II in 1788; the parish has been in the care of Herzogenburg Abbey ever since. Its baroque face dates from the era of Provost Hieronymus Übelbacher (1710–1740); the blue-and-white church tower of 1733 is considered the finest building of the complex and has become the landmark of the Wachau. The abbey stands in the middle of Dürnstein’s old town above the Danube — from Krems just a short hop upstream, a home route for us.

To be honest with you: the old-town lanes are closed to visitors’ cars, so the last stretch to the abbey is on foot — but with no hunting for a parking space, no ticket machine and no walk back to a car park on your mind.

No — Dürnstein’s narrow old-town lanes are closed to visitors’ cars. We take you to the edge of the town just below the abbey church, and the last stretch through the lanes is on foot. In return you skip the parking hunt entirely, and for the way back we wait for you again at the agreed spot.
