The Agapitus Chapel shapes the inner courtyard of Nikolaihof, and the courtyard is also home to the Kaiserlinde, a lime tree beneath which guests of the Weinstube, the estate’s wine restaurant, sit outdoors. A wine estate on Roman foundations
Nikolaihof stands on the eastern edge of the former Roman fort, whose ground now lies largely beneath Mautern’s old town; in the garden a low rise in the ground still shows where the east wall and its ditch ran. In places the buildings, most of them from the 15th century, rest on Roman foundations. The estate also takes in remains of the early Christian basilica of St Agapitus — in 985 a synod met there under Bishop Pilgrim of Passau. The Saahs family have owned the estate since 1894 and have worked biodynamically since 1971. The vineyards are farmed to Demeter standards.
To Nikolaigasse, by the town-hall square
We take you right to Nikolaigasse 3, a short walk from the town-hall square. With the old Stein–Mautern bridge closed to cars, coming from the north bank we take the St. Pöltner Brücke (B37) instead.
Mature vintages, then home
Whether the evening ends in the Weinstube or in Salon 77, the time we collect you at the estate is fixed when you book. Opening days and season for the Weinstube and Salon 77 are best checked with Nikolaihof itself before you go.

How late can you collect us from the Weinstube?
We run daily from 7 am to midnight — until then we collect you from Nikolaigasse at the time you have arranged. The official taxi tariff applies within the region; we quote the amount for your route in advance on the phone: +43 2732 81600.
The Welterbesteig trail’s stage to Krems starts at the town-hall square — can we ride back to Nikolaihof with you in the evening?
Yes. From the town-hall square near the estate, the stage crosses the Danube to Stein and continues to Hoher Markt in Krems. We collect you there or wherever you stop to eat and drive you back to Nikolaihof.
Our room is at the Gästehaus Nikolaihof — is that at the winery?
Not in the same courtyard: the “ad vineas” guesthouse has its own address, Kainzstraße 14, while the winery and the Weinstube are at Nikolaigasse 3. For the pickup, what counts is where you actually are — also when you are heading on to Krems station or Vienna Airport; the airport ride runs at a fixed price quoted in advance on the phone.
Can you book us a table at the Weinstube too?
No — you reserve the table with Nikolaihof yourselves and the ride with us. There is no link between the estate and WEISS.TAXI; we are an independent taxi from Krems.
